After launching Brave browser, the Brave team explored the idea of adding different services to the browser that customers would find valuable, while surpassing the usual expectations associated with a web browser.
One of the team’s first initiatives was to build Brave Talk, a secure, privacy conscious video conferencing solution. To do so, they needed video conferencing infrastructure and a comprehensive range of video features that aligned with the company’s strict privacy policies—all the while ensuring a consistent stream of recurring revenue.
Brave faced a key decision: either recruit a new and dedicated team of developers to painstakingly build their own infrastructure and feature set, a process that would be both time-intensive and costly, or search the market for a pre-existing, reputable, third-party alternative that could satisfy their requirements.
After reviewing several video conferencing solutions, the Brave team chose to integrate 8×8’s Jitsi as a Service (JaaS) into Brave Talk as it offered extensive functionality that aligned well with their goals and requirements.
They also saw the benefits of 8×8’s reliability and administrative tools that enabled the IT team to easily manage all aspects of the system themselves.
By choosing a fully managed video conferencing service to power Brave Talk, the company was able to save significant time and effort that would have otherwise been spent on building and maintaining the infrastructure and features in-house.
“One of the best things about Jitsi as a Service was just how many of the things that we wanted to do, all of the knobs, buttons, and hooks, were already in the solution out of the box,” said Matt McAlister, Director of Premium Products and Services, Brave.
With the underlying technology burden off their shoulders, the Brave team could then redirect their resources and attention towards building a great user experience, as well as developing new innovative products to enhance their customer offerings and continue to boost additional review streams.
For Brave, Jitsi as a Service provided an off-the-shelf video conferencing solution that was quick to implement yet still fully customisable to meet business needs.
In the end, the team was able to build and launch Brave Talk, a solution that was indeed valuable to their customer base—so much so that in its first year, Brave Talk saw a significant growth in customer usage.
Going forward, Brave also benefits from 8×8’s constant enhancements and innovations to JaaS. This allows the Brave development team to continue to evolve their video conferencing product in ways that are aligned with their own vision.
